Valentines Hints for High School

Dearest Readers,

It's two days until National Ferris Wheel Day!!!! Oh, and I've heard Valentines Day is coming up soon too... The point of this post is give people an idea of what's generally appropriate in terms of gift-giving for this emotional holiday (by appropriate, I don't mean scandal-free, politically correct gifts. I mean gifts that don't go overboard). OBVIOUSLY there are exceptions to these guidelines, so don't have a cow or hate on me because you don't agree with something here.  Just some random, helpful hints and tidbits of information that may help direct you to the best gift option.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen some poor, adorably lovestruck dude give a girl a gift that sends off the wrong message, just because he doesn't know how a girl thinks.  Hope this helps all you slackers who waited until February 12th to get a Valentines Day gift (kind of like I did)!

ROSES:
Different colors of roses mean different things.  Most girls know this.  Quite a few guys don't.  Here's the skinny:
RED roses are the standard romantic flower.  Basically, you give this to someone you are deeply in love with. Like, chick flick kind of love.
ORANGE roses, on the other hand, are more for a firey fling than anything else. Yes, they symbolize love, but the exciting, passionate kind that may or may not last. Still good, but be careful.
LAVENDER roses are a bit magical. Although they are unique, they symbolize all Disney Princess cliches.
PINK roses are for CRUSHES!!!!!  best for new, budding (ha!) relationships, or that cutie two rows over from you in french class ;)
YELLOW roses mean friendship.  NEVER give these to someone you want to date or are dating, because yellow roses scream "FRIEND ZONE!!!"
WHITE roses represent innocence, purity, and reverance. Usually used for weddings and such.
****AVOID CARNATIONS AT ALL COSTS!!! They're cheap. Your sweetheart deserves better.

JEWELRY
Jewelry, of course, is lovely, but not if it doesn't fit your style.  Happens all the time: a guy drops multiple paychecks on a gaudy pair of earrings for his girlfriend, and she can't wear them anywhere.  IT'S NOT ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU SPEND!  Spending $10 on something someone actually will like is better than spending $100 just because you think something expensive will show you care more.  Obviously, people will appreciate expensive gifts (and sometimes, it really is appropriate to spend more than $10), but if you plan on spending a lot of money, go classy and simple, not flashy or costume-y.

FOOD/HOME-MADE GIFTS
Food is lovely.  I'm pretty sure everyone likes food.  And, as a high school girl, I personally find nothing cuter than a boy's pathetic attempt at decorating a cake or cupcakes (the writing and drawings in the icing almost always look like they were done in a tornado). But if you're going the home-made route, please note: preschool-level macaroni art will not fly. Call me high-maintenence, but I need to see a little more effort than that. If you lack the ability to make something, you can still custom order cute gifts! It's like a professional temporarily giving you their talent in oder for you to make a gift! It's a tad bit awesome.  Plus, even if it's something small, like a decorative cupcake or a funny t-shirt, it's still very cute, and appropriate for high school relationships.

Damn.  I always write too much it seems.  Snaps to you for reading so much.  Happy Ferris Wheel Day!!!!!

xoxoxo,
Chels
